In 1997, a short Bond story called Blast From The Past was published in Playboy, in which Bond's adult son contacts him from New York, only to be killed when his old man turns up for Dad duties. At least, he did in Ian Fleming's version of You Only Live Twice, anyway: Bond gets Kissy Suzuki pregnant before departing for pastures new. James Bond Jr.No, not the short-lived (and terrible) cartoon: James Bond actually sired a child. The men who almost played Bond include Eric Bana, Hugh Jackman, James Purefoy, Julian McMahon, Gerard Butler, Sam Neill, Clint Eastwood (!) and Dougray Scott, who famously lost the role of Wolverine early in the X-Men shoot too. The Bonds That Never WereOnly six men have been lucky enough to play James Bond on screen, but they leave in their wake a huddled mass of weeping actors denied their dream role. Did you know that by the time he starred in A View To A Kill in 1985, Roger Moore's hair had to be professionally thickened before each take? Hair Today, Gone TomorrowWe all remember the needless furore surrounding the appointment of a blonde Daniel Craig as Bond in 2005, but more shocking is the fact that Sean Connery wore a toupee for every single one of his outings as 007. Other physical details that have since been ditched include a three-inch scar on his cheek and the faint scar of a Russian Cyrillic letter carved onto his hand by a SMERSH agent who had marked him as a spy. The Look Of BondEver wondered how Fleming intended James Bond to look? On two occasions, Bond is remarked to resemble the American singer-songwriter Hoagy Carmichael (below), except with a "cruel mouth" and a "coldness in the eyes". Fun Bob Simmons fact: he was the man who pioneered the use of trampolines in the field of jumping away from explosions. The Bond Who Wasn't BondThere's nothing more iconic in Bond lore than the opening gun barrel sequence, but did you know that the man who turns and shoots in the first three Bond movies isn't Sean Connery? It's actually stuntman Bob Simmons, whose silhouette was used by designer Maurice Binder when Connery was unavailable. When Bond fakes his death in You Only Live Twice, his 'funeral' looks awfully similar to a Navy burial at sea. Rank And FileThough his military rank is never explicitly detailed in the films, James Bond served as a Commander in the Royal Navy (he's referred to as such in A View To A Kill and GoldenEye) before he began working for the British Secret Service. Whatever it takes to keep the British end up, dude. Places where 007 has 'attempted re-entry' include a train, a plane, a forest, a stable, a motorised iceberg (obviously), a hospital, a submarine, a dinghy and a space shuttle. Sex BombA frisky blighter and no mistaking, James Bond has done more than his fair share of blowing away the stereotype that Brits are unadventurous lovers. Think that's weird? George Lazenby got the job after being spotted in an ad for Fry's Chocolate Cream. No after seeing him in Disney film Darby O'Gill And The Little People. ![]() For Your Size OnlyIt's quite possible the James Bond we know and love owes his popularity to leprechauns: producer Albert R. Nelson went on to play the manager of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. ![]() The first man to ever embody 007 was American actor Barry Nelson, who played card shark 'Jimmy Bond' in a terrible adaptation of Casino Royale for US TV. Meet Jimmy BondSean Connery was not the first actor to play James Bond, and no, it wasn't Blockbusters host Bob Holness either. We bet he puts away more than a few Maccy Ds on the road, though. Bond's favourite foods when off duty include grilled sole, oeufs en cocotte (eggs and crème fraîche to you and me) and cold roast beef with potato salad. Bond's BeefIt's as rare to see James Bond eating as it is to see Jack Bauer having a wee, but Ian Fleming detailed plenty of 007's eating habits in his books. Another Bond-esque figure thought to be factored into 007's DNA was a British intelligence officer and MI6 station head in Paris – given point six above, we're lucky England's greatest secret agent didn't introduce himself as "Dunderdale… Wilfred "Biffy" Dunderdale." 8. Bond's BlueprintAmong the other inspirations for the character of James Bond was Ian Fleming's beloved elder brother Peter, a journeyed travel writer and explorer. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Obviously we've worked and we've been compensated for it, handsomely, which makes a lot of aspects of life easier. "It's a real across-the-board audience and it's a lot easier to deal with and to play to, I think." "A lot of men come to the shows now, a lot of younger people," says Taylor. While audiences when they started out were predominantly young women, the typical Duran Duran crowd has changed over the years. "So we've got to either love them or hate them, and it's much nicer if you love them, it makes your life much happier." "Every time we go on stage, we play Rio, we play Hungry Like The Wolf, we play those songs because we know that the people in the audience would not be happy if we didn't," says Le Bon. "I think we've been on a bit of a journey of self-acceptance over the last few years." " was the first one that said, you know what? Everyone's trying to sound like you, why don't you try and sound a bit more like yourselves?" says Taylor. It was Mark Ronson, who they have worked with a few times over the past decade or so, who helped them start to embrace their '80s-ness once again after a period of reluctance. Both Le Bon and Taylor stress they are band always focused on the future and the new, but they are aware of how they got here. Known for their innovation, from early music video pioneers through to their AI video, Duran Duran have passed the stage where they feel awkward about embracing their roots. ![]() Image: The band used AI 'Huxley' to create the video for INVISIBLE, the first single from their latest album. We've always tried to push the boundaries, but that was really. We didn't really know what to expect but I was really blown away by it. "The images were astounding, I have to say. It's a very different concept to the video for INVISIBLE, the album's first single, which was created entirely through AI, "a kind of alien creature", as Taylor puts it, called Huxley. "There was one point where I did actually look down and I thought, hang on, that's not the real Jennifer Lopez, is it? It's very, very convincing." "You'd hear someone saying, 'Oh I'm afraid Meghan's broken her ankle and Harry's got a cold, so they're not going to make it tonight'." Still, they got the Queen. "Like all Duran Duran parties, we invite everybody," says Le Bon. While the band haven't marked the milestone year with an actual party, the celebrations come in the form of the single ANNIVERSARY (the album title and the singles are all in capitals), and a video featuring a wealth of celebrity lookalikes, from Elton John and Dolly Parton to Lady Gaga and Posh Spice. MORE: 7 Slimming Workouts For Small SpacesĪs tempting as it may be to shoot straight to the elliptical every time you enter the gym, you should never be using one machine exclusively, says Europe. But, unlike a treadmill, a large incline won’t increase the difficulty-instead, it’s easier for your legs to push and pull through the stride. Some models have a ramp incline, similar to a treadmill. When you’re working your arms and legs, try intervals-focus on your arms for 1 minute, then pump your legs for 4, and repeat through your workout. Incorporate the moving handles two days a week to put your upper body to work, and hang on to the stable handles on the others, says Cassetty. Keeping a steady, moderate pace at a resistance that forces you to use your muscles will get, and keep, your heart rate up. If you can hear the purr of the machine while you’re exercising, it means that you’re going too fast without enough resistance-which means you’re not getting the most calorie burn out of your time, Cassetty says. Your machine sounds like it’s going to take off Instead, sit back into your heels, which allows large muscle groups to work harder and gives you the stamina to go for longer, according to Cassetty.ħ. One of the most common elliptical mistakes is putting too much pressure on your toes, which can make your feet go numb and cut your workout short. You can do this in one of two ways: Leave the resistance steady and change your pace (fast for 1 minute moderate for 4) or maintain your speed and change your resistance (challenging resistance for 1 minute moderate for 4). Intervals are a great way to break up the monotony of the machine and boost your calorie burn, says Europe. You haven’t changed your workout in months To max out the effect, sit back slightly, keeping your knees at a 90-degree angle as you stride.ĥ. While moving forward fatigues your quads, backwards puts emphasis on your hamstrings and glutes. ![]() Going backwards doesn’t just stop you from getting bored, it also changes which large muscle groups are working hardest, says Europe. “You shouldn’t feel like you have even 5 minutes left in you when you step off,” she says. Then, continue at a moderate pace until you feel like you’ve done all you can do. Make sure that you’re using enough resistance to push and pull through the stride. You might feel like a million bucks stepping a mile a minute, but without resistance, you’re not going to see results, says Röbynn Europe, a personal trainer at Chelsea Piers in New York City. ![]() ![]() Like Steve I’ve also noticed rather empty CW and SSB portions of the band. JT65 FLDIGI PLUSĮven psk31 signals hard to find, while the JT65 slice is overflowing with signals, often S9 plus many dBs in strength. Steve lists the usual reasons often cited for its popularity: the waning sun, increased urban spectrum noise, working DX contacts at very low power levels and with modest antennas, no-code hams etc. But frankly, I think there is more to it.īecause, apart from JT65 there are many other modes that work well under difficult conditions. So why is JT65 king and Olivia not? Here is my list: Like the JT-modes all based on MFSK and even deep in the noise you can still use them for meaningful communication over long distance. The smart phone has taken over as our main means of communication. However, 99% of its use is for written communication, not for voice. That written content is often not very extensive or deep: simply short bursts of information and often even in code like geek speak or emojies. I think many people either don’t want to, are too lazy to, or forgot how to talk in a meaningful way. The complaint about PSK31 was that is was mostly used for 599-73 macro QSOs. With JT65 you don’t even have the possibility to go deeper than 599-73, because it’s all that you can do with it. QSOs in Olivia can take an hour or more, because you can write whatever you like and engage in real conversation. Living in Asia I know that many hams here are intimidated by English. Speaking English is most awkward for many Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Part of it is lack of proper English education and part of it is saving face. If your language and typing skills are sub-par then you rather not engage in more than a basic exchange. Thus JT65 is your best choice, Olivia clearly not. Whatever you use for the JT-modes, it’s basically like a smart phone app. Everything has been hashed out already and is presented on a silver platter. A few clicks of a mouse and you have made a QSO, automatically uploaded to a logbook on the web, probably including some form of QSLing. Compare that to Fldigi (the Swiss army knife of digital modes) where you have to find the right frequency, choose the right mode, zero in on the signal and only then you can start playing. ![]() JT65 FLDIGI SOFTWAREįor ease of use JT65 software is the master, Fldigi the not so convenient Jack-of-all-Trades. Standards are a great thing and hard to come by. You can use JT-modes on any frequency, but there are designated meeting grounds if you are looking for a QSO. Added bonus is that on HF you monitor a 2 kHz wide portion of the spectrum, so you can quickly find the most interesting stations. Olivia has designated frequencies, too, but they are not set in stone, thus you are less likely to meet someone on air. FLdigi doesn’t guide you to a set frequency, that task is up to you. ![]() |
